Type 1 Granite
Mixed grades from dust to 40mm
Type 1 granite is the industry-standard material for sub-base construction work. This MOT-certified crushed granite aggregate is essential for creating stable, load-bearing foundations beneath driveways, patios, paths, and building floors. The angular nature of crushed granite allows the particles to interlock when compacted, creating an incredibly strong base layer that resists movement and settling over time.
Common Uses:
- Driveway sub-base construction
- Building floor base layers
- Road construction and repairs
- Patio and path foundations
- Drainage trenches and soakaways
- Hardstanding areas for vehicles
Essential for any construction project requiring a solid, stable foundation
Building Sand
Fine grade, washed
Our building sand, also known as soft sand or bricklayers sand, is a fine-grade washed sand that forms the foundation of quality mortar and concrete mixes. Sourced from trusted suppliers and carefully graded, this sand provides the smooth, workable consistency that professional builders demand. The fine particles ensure excellent adhesion when mixed with cement, creating strong bonds between bricks, blocks, and rendering applications.
Common Uses:
- Bricklaying and blockwork mortar
- General-purpose concrete mixes
- Floor screed preparation
- Rendering and plastering
- Pointing and repointing
- Garden and children's play areas
The go-to sand for all bricklaying, rendering and general construction work
Sharp Sand
Coarse grade, washed
Sharp sand, sometimes called grit sand or concreting sand, features larger, more angular particles compared to building sand. This coarser texture makes it ideal for applications requiring greater strength and improved drainage. When mixed with cement, sharp sand creates a stronger bond than soft sand, making it the preferred choice for floor screeds, paving joints, and heavy-duty concrete work. The angular particles also promote better water drainage in landscaping applications.
Common Uses:
- Floor screeds and levelling compounds
- Grouting and joint filling
- Drainage improvement
- Paving and slab bedding
- Strong concrete mixes
- Render base coats
Best for floor screeds, paving work and applications requiring superior strength

10mm graded, washed
Our 10mm natural stone is a versatile, decorative aggregate perfect for adding the finishing touches to outdoor spaces. These smaller stones are ideal for areas with light foot traffic, creating attractive, well-draining surfaces for paths, borders, and garden features. The washed, graded stones provide a clean, professional appearance that enhances kerb appeal while offering practical benefits like weed suppression and moisture retention around plants.
Common Uses:
- Garden paths and walkways
- Plant bed mulching and top dressing
- Pot plant drainage
- Decorative borders and edging
- Drainage around foundations
- Fish pond features
Perfect for decorative landscaping and light-use pathways
20mm Natural Stone
20mm graded, washed
The 20mm natural stone is our most popular decorative aggregate, offering the ideal balance between aesthetics and practicality. These larger stones are substantial enough to stay in place on driveways and high-traffic areas while providing excellent drainage properties. The clean, washed appearance makes an immediate visual impact, transforming tired outdoor spaces into attractive, low-maintenance features that look great year-round.
Common Uses:
- Driveway surfaces and top dressing
- Decorative borders and rockeries
- Shed bases and foundations
- Garden paths and patios
- Drainage channels and French drains
- Commercial landscaping
The most popular choice for driveways, paths and general landscaping

Crushed brick rubble is an economical, environmentally-friendly alternative to virgin aggregates. Made from recycled construction materials, this hardcore is perfect for sub-base work where appearance isn’t a concern. The mixed composition of crushed brick, concrete, and stone provides excellent compaction properties at a fraction of the cost of primary aggregates. Choosing recycled materials helps reduce landfill waste while delivering reliable performance for your project.
Common Uses:
- Hardcore and sub-base for drives
- Backfilling trenches and holes
- Building foundation bases
- Road base and farm track repairs
- Temporary access roads
- Land drainage projects
Budget-friendly, sustainable option for sub-base and hardcore applications

Rich in organic matter and nutrients, this quality topsoil gives plants the best possible start. Whether you’re establishing a new lawn, filling raised beds, or improving tired garden soil, our topsoil provides the foundation for healthy, vigorous plant growth.

20mm Ballast
20mm graded with sand
20mm ballast, also known as all-in aggregate or all-in ballast, is a ready-mixed combination of sand and gravel that provides the perfect base material for concrete work. This versatile aggregate eliminates the need to mix separate sand and stone, saving time and ensuring consistent results. The 20mm graded stone combined with sand creates a well-balanced mix ideal for general concrete applications, from garden paths to shed bases.
Common Uses:
- Concrete mixing for paths and bases
- Garden structure bases
- Drainage applications
- General-purpose foundations
- Pipe bedding and backfill
- Landscaping projects
Convenient all-in-one solution for concrete mixing and general construction
Tarmac Plainings
Recycled tarmac, variable grade
Tarmac plainings, also called road plainings or tarmac scalpings, are recycled asphalt material removed from road surfaces during resurfacing work. This eco-friendly, cost-effective material is perfect for creating temporary access roads, farm tracks, or hardcore sub-base layers. When compacted, plainings bind together to create a stable, relatively dust-free surface that’s particularly popular for equestrian facilities, driveways, and rural pathways.
Common Uses:
- Farm tracks and access roads
- Equestrian arenas and tracks
- Driveway surfaces
- Temporary site roads
- Hardcore and sub-base

Common questions about our aggregates and how to use them
The amount depends on your driveway size and the depth of material required. As a rough guide, you'll need approximately 1 tonne of Type 1 per 10 square metres at 50mm compacted depth. For a standard single car driveway (around 15m²), you'd need roughly 1.5-2 tonnes of sub-base. Contact us with your measurements and we'll calculate exact quantities.
Building sand (soft sand) has fine, rounded particles ideal for mortar, rendering and bricklaying. Sharp sand has coarser, angular particles better suited for floor screeds, paving, and concrete where greater strength and drainage are needed. Use building sand for joining materials together; use sharp sand for structural applications.
Yes, different aggregates serve different purposes. A typical driveway project might use Type 1 granite for the sub-base, sharp sand for bedding, and 20mm decorative stone as the surface layer. Our team can advise on the right combination for your specific project requirements.
Measure your area in square metres, then multiply by the depth in metres. For lawn establishment, you typically need 150mm (0.15m) depth. So a 50m² lawn would need 50 x 0.15 = 7.5 cubic metres. Topsoil weighs approximately 1.4 tonnes per cubic metre, so you'd need around 10.5 tonnes.
Yes, they're the same product. MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, which set the original specification. Type 1 granite meets this specification for sub-base material, making it suitable for road construction and any load-bearing foundation work.
20mm gravel is the most popular choice for driveways. It's large enough to stay in place under vehicle traffic but small enough to walk on comfortably. 10mm is better suited for decorative borders and paths with lighter foot traffic.
Crushed brick rubble can work well for many sub-base applications, particularly non-critical areas like garden paths, shed bases, and temporary access routes. For driveways carrying regular vehicle traffic, Type 1 granite is recommended as it provides superior compaction and load-bearing properties.
For driveways, a minimum of 100-150mm compacted Type 1 is recommended. For patios and paths with lighter use, 75-100mm is usually sufficient. For areas with heavy vehicle traffic or poor ground conditions, you may need up to 200mm depth.
Yes, all our aggregates and decorative stone are available in bulk bags (approximately 850kg each) as well as loose bulk loads. Bulk bags are convenient for smaller projects or where access is limited. They're easy to move with a forklift and keep materials clean and contained.
We have no strict minimum, but delivery costs are the same whether we bring half a tonne or several tonnes. For small quantities, collecting from our yard often works out more economical. For deliveries, we typically recommend at least 1-2 tonnes to make delivery cost-effective.
